It follows a simple I - V - IV - V - I pattern. In the key of D, that makes:
D - A - G(9) - A - D
Notice how in this example, the A is held throughout at the top. It's common to both D and A chords, but
creates a poignant 'crush' on the G chord to form a G9 chord.
