The notation shown above tells the player to lightly touch the string at the 12th fret. This produces a light, "flute-like" tone at the same pitch as the normal stopped note. Natural harmonics can also be produced at the 5th and 7th frets, although here the pitch produced is different:
5th fret = an octave and a 5th above the stopped fret (= 2 octaves above the open string)
7th fret = an octave above the stopped fret (= an octave and a 5th above the open string)
