Charles Francois Gounod (June 17, 1818 - October 18, 1893) was a French composer, best known for his opera Faust.
Mors et Vita ('Death and Life') was premiered in Birmingham in 1885, and featured a judge, who sits on a throne, intoning his judgments. That judge (Judex) has possibly the most beautiful music in the whole piece and is often played as a stand alone piece
