Hi Angie,
Although there were no metronomes in the earlier part of the 1700s, I have a recording that puts the tempo at about 144 to the quarter note. It could be played a bit slower but nott too much as it might make the mvt. flow less smoothly. If you do use a metronome, get the tempo from it and then turn it off for the practice.

I usually do it at about 132 to the quarter, Bilbo is correct, no metronomes then, so pieces were based on style more than speed

Lyra,
"It all dipends on metronome I have."
Does this mean tht you have more than one metronome & that they sound at different speeds wnhen set to the same number?
Dipends BTW, I think should be spelled "depends". If I have the correct word... dipends would sound like die-pends which is no one's accent or pronunciation that I've ever known of.

Kara, you are so bad!!
Now, this statement by Lera has to be the most confusing one for me.....depending on which metronome is used? Huh? Way out there!
