Hi - I have a yamaha fl221 I think taht is the model, it is extremely nice, any how, Where can I get some easier / basic sheet music to play and some free lessons while I am waiting for a call from the local music shop, I put my name up on the board for lesson, no one has called me yet.

My son uses Essential Elements 2000 for trombone. If the flute version is similar, then I'd get that if you are self-learning--it has a decent selection of music, and it comes with an instructional DVD that shows you how to put the instrument together and get started. It is also relatively inexpensive. Don't be surprised, though, if your flute teacher needs you to buy a different book once you start lessons.

As for free lessons, nothing in life is free. However, if you have a friend who plays the flute, you might ask that person to help you get started. I'd also suggest that, if you haven't received any calls based on a bulletin board posting in a music store, that you simply start calling around.

I noticed you're also starting on sax, wouldn't it be easier to just start off with just one new instrument and take it from there?

Oh, and having said that, Trevor Wye is pretty much a classic in the field. There's also the "Jazz Method for Flute" which I haven't tried but sounds fun, and a myriad of others.

I was going to recommend that (his beginners method), but haven't actually laid eyes on it. Is it OK for self-learning? I suppose some of it depends on your learning style, as well. I know that, for the trombone at least, since I don't play that instrument, the DVD that came with my son's book was worth it's weight in gold after he got home from his first lesson at school.

I got started on Essential Elements. Wonderful book! Gives you a CD and I already had the book out and used before school started, the year I learned the flute. It got me a really good head start from the other players.

I used Trevor Wye's method for the first two years, but taking lessons with a teacher.
You find some hints and few basic recommendations in the first book, but I wonder whetether I could have advanced with my learning were I left alone just with that book. Probably there are better methods for self learning, I guess. Good luck in any case!
