I am just writing this message to introduce myself iam new two playing the flute about two weeks into it, finding it very hard. It wasn't a wise move to to learn a new instrument at 24. I am finding it fun tho.
Hey, I was 36 before I first picked up a flute. (I didn't think it wise to try and wait until I turned 12 again.) That was a year and a half ago, but it's still great fun. The earlier the better (probably), but the best time is generally now. Anyway, you might enjoy it more as an adult, doing so of your own volition, then you would if your parents had made you at 10. Granted your chances of becoming a pro are rather reduced, but despite what people say, adults are often able to pick things up more quickly than kids because they concentrate more and work harder.
* Practise everyday, better every day 20 min than 2 hours once a week.
* The shortcut to a nice tone is "boring" and fatigue tone exercises.
(get M. Moyse, De la Sonorite)
* Donīt give up when you think you are not making progress.
* Be stuborn
* Have fun!
I am new also and started in October at age 38. I found the book "How to love your flute" helpful and I go to a private flute tutor in my area. I think the lessons are definatly worth the money because the instant feedback and knowledge is very helpful. I know I would be doing things wrong if not for her. <<As well as my 11 yo daughter correcting me when needed >>
This forum is excellent. Check out the archives for lots of great info too.
Hi,
I started playing the flute this year, aged 29. I dont believe that you are ever too old to try something new!
I have a background in music(piano) so had that on my side, but had never really picked up a flute before!
Welcome aboard... I'm sure you'll start enjoying your flute soon.

Welcome Karl. It's never to late to take up to flute. People take up the flute FAR late in life and develop amazing playing skills. You've got a head start
I would suggest visiting Jennifer Cluff's wonderful flute site. It has a section for beginners with guidelines on how to start and then some: http://www.jennifercluff.com/beginn.htm
