I am always looking for something new and exciting to play. I know we have a TON of discussion on this forum about instruments...but how about music!!! Thought it could be a nice change! So, what are some of the greatest pieces you have played (and if you want to elaborate...why)???
My all time favorite is the Berio Sequenza. It was a huge challege at the time and I had a lot of pride in the fact that I defeated it!!! It is modern and I always have a blast figuring out all the extra things...harmonics...key slaps...huge dynamic leaps.
But, then I also adore Bach Sonatas. I would be torn between the E major and the e minor...b minor just seems to go on too long. E major holds a special place since it was my first Bach sonata. But, the e minor...yummy! I love the first movement.
Ok, well there is some of my fun for today! This way, everyone who want to can get involved. Maybe we all can gleem some new ideas for our next selection of music from this!!!

Hmmm, so many possibilities.....
for duets, my all time farvorite is WF Bach duo no. 4
baroque: vivaldi flute concertos
classical: haha! I can't think of anything other than Mozart concerti
romantic: doppler hungarian pastorale fantasy
20th cent: Poulenc sonata
were you looking for favorite pieces to perform, or favorite pieces to listen to?

oh, the Doppler is fantasic and fun!!! I am not looking for pieces personally (necessarily)....but thought it would be a fun topic! There hasn't been a sheer discussion topic on this board for a while! Currently I am working on way too many things...Jolivet (Chant de Linos), a piece by Franciax, Bach b minor, and several orchestral excerpts. Really, just wanted to read some stuff other the...which instrument is best for me...ha ha ha!!!

Syrinx is also a piece near and dear to my heart. That should have been on my list somewhere too. I remember reading discussions about a year ago regarding it and how the new trend, if you will, is to play it exactly how debussy wrote it. I just can never do it that way; the piece doesn't speak to me then. In certain parts I treat the rhythm like I do the penny cup at 7-11; take some, give some. Then it really comes alive for me. It was the first piece I really delved into expression, and adding my own personal touch to it, my own musicality.
Another bonus is I got a $2,000 scholarship for college for playing it lol! Always a reason to like a piece. 2K for less than 3 min. of work hahaha

actually, the prokofiev sonata in d was originally written for flute but a man by the name of David Oistrakh requested that he also write it for violin. the version for violin has the letter "b" after the opus number (ex: op. 94b) where the flute version has the letter "a" after it (ex: op. 94a)
just a little history!
my favorite piece to play was Dutilleux- Sonatine. i guess it was because i first performed it as a junior in high school and was known statewide on it. a very high acheivement on a very difficult piece.

Some of my favorites are the Chesky Concerto and the Tchaikovsky concerto. They're both fabulous works (albeit with very different styles). I'm pretty fond of Romantic and Modern music, as well as music influenced by other cultures, so Gary Schocker's work, Christopher Caliendo, Reinecke, Ian Clarke, etc. all are particularly interesting to me.

Yeah, I gotta check out that Tchaik concerto. That sounds really cool. When you first posted something about it, I had just spent way too much on music...so I figured my husband would kill me if I ordered something else. It is on my wish list

I'm not a complete expert over pieces (actually I probably only played 60 pieces in my life). My favorite is Hindesmith Sonate. I'm learning it for Solo and Ensemble this year and it gives my chills when I play it.

I have a lot of really nice pieces. But some of them are REALLY popular so maybe you have played some of them.
1. concertino by cecile chaminade
2. Poulenc sonata 1st movement
3. bourre anglaise
4. the pink panther ( i know this is really easy, but it is the first piece I learned and it sounds really nice on the flute.)

OOPS forgot to explain.
Well, the chaminade is really romantic and soft at the start and is perfect to show a crowd your tone, when it gets to the middle it starts speeding up and can make a crowd think you are really good.
The poulenc is always a hit, I dont know why but the crowd really catch on to the melody and they want more.
Bourre Anglaise, it is pretty fast when you are playing it right and has a few skips in notes, people will see this even if they dont know a think about music.
Finaly the pink panther, very easy, but everyone knows that song when I did this for a small solo in a concert the crowd was already clapping before I was done and had to stop early, in other words PEOPLE WILL LOVE IT!!
Hope this helps.
