Just wondering, what other schools (besides the big named conservatories)do you think are good for graduate performance degrees. Any suggestions? Thanks a ton!

Happy Practicing!!

Any school with a good teacher can be a good place to study, even if it doesn't have the fame attached to it that Julliard or Eastman do...Cal State Sacramento has Laurel Zucker, Jim Walker is at USC Thornton, Chris Potter teaches in Boulder, Colorado, etc. Find a performer (if you haven't already) whose sound and interpretations you like, and then take a look here:

and see if they aren't teaching. After all, you're mainly after the education (and thus the teacher) rather than the school name, so find someone who you think you'd be interested in studying with, and then do some research about the school they're at. Good luck to you!

this list may be helpful, but it really depends on what your looking for:
University of North Texas, they are very innovative and focus a lot on tone developement
Unlv, again very innovative in the music they play. Not really classical at all they like to work on good technique.

I really don't care about the region nor would I choose a school based on reputation. And I have a couple of universities and some conservatories in mind. But my teacher thought I should see what other flutist out there were thinking of. I'm sure some of you know of excellent teachers that I haven't heard of. For example, I heard the flute professor at UMKC is awesome. Thanks for the list. Keep em coming!

Again, it depends upon what you really want to do.

Classical? Orchestral? Motion picture soundtracks? Studio? Rock and Jazz? Armed Forces Band? Teaching?

There are tons of possible avenues, but we need more information before we can give more exact answers.

I would think, that depending upon what area of the country you live in, you might consider: Indiana University. That would be a good choice.

If you live in the Chicago area, then consider DePaul University. Anumber of former flutists with the CSO teach there.

Hope this helps.
