Binx...the way to deal with a troll is NOT to be a troll back.

so i'm a troll now for fighting back? what is wrong with you people? he is closing down all of kara's threads and posting down others as well. there is no reason for it. he did it to micron's posts not too long ago too. i don't know about you but i don't think it is right. so i spoke up and now suddenly i'm the bad guy? i vote that the voting system be taken down because it is being abused. hate me all you want but i am not going to sit back and watch this happen.

danthemaster, why are you even on a flute forum when you play trombone? the only posts you have made on the flute forum is in the troll threads. hmmm....

I actually have posted on pertinent flute forum topics in the past. But now all that there is on the flute forum is bickering and trolling.I appreciate that you want to keep the forums an interesting and informing place to discuss all things music. However, I reiterate that the solution to the troll problem is NOT to fight fire with fire.(Or in this case, flames with flames.) It'll die down. Trolls get bored. Binx, my intent was not to call you a troll. You haven't been acting trollish. However, you were threatening to do some things that seemed no better than what the true trolls on this forum do. So all I ask is that you be careful. I will not jump to conclusions and peg you as a troll. I ask that you do the same for me.

fair enough. i know what you mean about not wanting to fight firer with firer, but it is getting frustrating that no one is doing anything about it.

People here that have got their accounts closed have requested this to the Admin. It may be a consequence, but it is not a direct troll action. Please respect those memebers decisions.

IMO it is not respectful to copy and resurrect those threads. Those were little battles won by the troll and so they should stay. A sad fact of -virtual- life.

you have it wrong, i believe you misunderstood my intentions. a troll was thumbing down even the positive posts that started a thread. in return this takes the entire thread off the board. i don't see anything wrong with the post kara made about her play testing a flute yet that was thumbs down by a troll using multiple accounts. her account may be closed but what is wrong with listening to her play on youtube?

I didn't wanted, but I'll have to say something.
There are only two ways (IMHO) to "fight" this.
One, sadly, is the one our friend chose, going away.
The other is completely ignoring ANY post or person that comes to be offensive or inappropriate.
Responses just feed their willing for disturbing and making masses all around.

Sorry binx, it seems that I misunderstood you.

The voting system was installed about a year ago, when a previous outbreak of trollism and verbal violence was at its highest. It was well accepted then by our community as it is an exercise in forum democracy. But, as is also the case in some other aspects of majority polling, there can be abuses.

Thumbing down a post several times (with different accounts) makes it partially disappear from the thread, but it is still visible if you click on it, anyway.

It is not related at all with the closing of an account (I think you know this).

Owning of more than an unique account is unacceptable by the Forum rules, but this is difficult to detect and prevent, considering the wide availability of free public email addresses and the dynamic nature of the assignment of IP addresses by the ISPs. This is something we have to live with, as we have to live with the normal prevalence of poorly adapted (or plainly ill) people in our societies.

I do not find anything wrong in linking to a Youtube video, even if the original account is closed or the post was thumbed down. If the owner chose to leave the video there it is OK, IMO.

What I object to is an action to resurrect threads or posts from closed accounts. But it seems that it was not the case, so I apologize again.

At the moment, it seems that the only method of "fighting" is ignoring. Without a moderator, there is not much forum members can do... and that is sad, really. With proper control, the troll would have been taken care of *before* creating such a mess.

Micron is right; however I still hold hopes that the forum will survive. We have been through worst situations in the recent past and we could survive.

It is true that some people, who had fought very hardly against the previous trolling outbreak (and won that battle), are now gone. This has been a hard blow to digest and an important success for the trollers.

This site has some on-demand moderation. It is weak and slow, but it is there. Each Forum has its own personality, given in part by their members and also by the admin/moderator.

I appreciate the large freedom we have here to be opinionated, to allow considerable subject drift within the same thread and the variety of people that come here and ask their question or provide answers.

It may happen that I do not feel so much comfortable in a strongly moderated forum. I am thinking of Galways' forum, that one, more than moderated is simply censored almost in real time.

As for the saxontheweb, I may give it a try. However, I do not like the name, to start with; I have no saxon origin that I know of and I might think I feel there sort of an intruder in such racially defined place. Or I may be a little paranoid about it; in any case I would appreciate if anybody could explain the why of such strange name. It does not seem related to saxophones, there is a surplus "n" there.

Hmmm... I think it is sax-on-the-web, i.e., sax(ophone) on the web.

I read it too literally; possibly my defective perception of some English words.

That sax-on-the would be a nice word play, even for a flutist...

Thank you for the clarification.

<Added>

I have been visiting the saxontheweb forum. One problem I see is that it is quite saxophone-oriented. Even fluting is considered a doubling to saxo playing, unless I misunderstood the whole thing once more.

Doubling or not, there seems to be lots of interesting activity in the flute/piccolo related "doublers"

I have started posting there, see what happens.
