You are right Carlos, Hariprasad play bass flute tuned on E though he has played a few ragas on D also.

Which flute you play?

Is it Bamboo flute or english flute?

Yeah Rajesh, I have been learning Indian Classicalon flute from past 3 years though this learning was in break.

Classical based music is mostly based on the feel and grace notes which people usually don`t play which playing light hindi songs and this feel can only come from bass flutes.

High pitched flutes give the feel of folk.

There is a beautiful jugalbandi of flute based on Raag Hansadwhani(my favourite raag) in the Vishwa Mohan Bhat`s album `Relaxation`

Every flute player must have this cassette.

And those who are practicing semi classical hindi songs, they can get a cassette from Chandigarh from a famous flutist there in sec- 17 below `Bombay saree Center`

That cassette have helped me master some very melodious hindi songs.

Dear flute lovers...I think all the flute lovers must have this CD as in this hectic world one cannot spare time for searching a good flute guru and who would be a better guru than Pt H.P Chaurasia.

Hi together
first of all a great program that is freeware, its called making musik, it is an online Musical Instrument Encyclopedia, providing a description, an image and a sound clip per instrument. the bansuri flute and lots of instruments never heard before are described. but it is only for mac os x. sorry for the rest.

a nice link to buy indian instruments: http://www.indische-instrumente.de it`s in German and English.
another two nice links with fingering charts:
http://music.calarts.edu/~bansuri/pages/fingering.html
http://www.chandrakantha.com/articles/indian_music/bansuri.html

and at last a page where you can order a practice book with cd: http://www.admin.northpark.edu/lleifer/bnsml.html

Hariprasad Chaurasia Flutes Pitch : To Carlos and other friends    11:52 on Sunday, November 14, 2004

Pandit Hariprasad Chaurasia uses mostly E bass bansuri. Although at times he uses/has used C#, D, D#, F, F# (all Bass)& A, D (high pitch)in his recordings /concerts.

In my opinion even the best books can be only tiny bit helpful. It is surely very important to find yourself a bansuri teacher...at least in the beginning so that you start off with good holding, fingering and breath technique. And most of the rest depends on how much `sadhana` (~practice) you put in. I have tried studying bansuri with the help of books but then early on I was able to find a good teacher so I know what a big, big, difference it is between a real teacher and a book ( I am sure all of us know this in one context or the other). There are numerous tips and tricks of the instument which can be imbibed only when face to face with a teacher.

Another thing, I have learnt in my seven years of learning and playing on the instrument is that it is important to have a well-tuned bansuri. It helps you develop `good ears` which is a very prime aspect of Indian music. One source of excellent quality and reasonably priced bansuri flutes I have come to rely on is www.anubodh.com

It is a good practice to play with a tonic drone (tanpura) as in the beginning at least it is easy to blow your `Sa` high and low in the same session. Tanpura helps you stay in tune.

much said
