I am a freshie at lemont high band. i play bass clarinet but i hated the parts so i was going to play soprano for concert band and bass clarinet for marching. So, my band director still gave me the symphonic band auditions for bass! Over the summer i stuggled with myself over those stupid auditions. I wasn`t able to get the regular clarinet auditions and even if i was, i`m not that good at clarinet. Also, in middle school i was the best bass clarinet in the band and at summer sectionals i saw that the older bass clarinets aren`t exactley maestros! And i started oboe independantly and i would have to be in symphonic to play double in the lower band. Also, i`m friend with the whole bass section and they all want me to stay. So, about three weeks before school starts( the high school starts way earlier than the middle school, so i got maybe a month and 3/4) I decided to stick with bass in both and i have to learn these symphonic auditions and get a 75 or better to get in. That`s were you come in. I am in diar neee of some advice on how to get a 75 om about 3 pages of etudes. How much should i practice and how schould i go about doing it? Is 3 weeks enough? Is there something i should practice more in the auditions? i need your help!!!!

Thank You

Well, 3 weeks should be enough if you practice alot 1.30h or more hours a day. You should do alot of tecnique, that will realy impresse them for your audition. for your practicing, you should do warm ups for like 15 minutes, then do some scales. Try to learn your 12 major scales. then do tecnique for 20 minutes or so.then you could work on a piece( something short, but impressive) don`t chose something long and boaring.Maybe your piece should have a fast section and a slow section, that will show them you can play fast and slow.
I was in a similer situation, I tryed out for the New Brunswic Youth Orchestra and i only had like 3 weeks to prepare:0

Hope it helpsl

I`ve not had to choose thingsfor auditions before, but I would say try to find something that shows a good understanding of rhythm patterns and technique. Like, a piece that has some more compelx rhythms tahn the sinple eight/quarter scheme. Perhaps some nice triplets, dotted rhythms, etc. I played Sonata V by Johann Ernst Galliard for Bass Clarient at the NYSSMA Solo Festival a few months ago, it wasn`t too difficult to learn, and was definately diverse. A level 5. I also agree with the fast/slow thing. Something with a tempo change could definately give you an edge.
