I will be playing solo or with other C instuments. Would a key of C clarinet be good? Also, why are most clarinets in the key of B flat? Please advise Thank you...

The Soprano and Bass clarinet are in Bb. I`d really need to know the key of teh piece to tell you what key you`d be in, but basically you`ll be playing 2 semitones higher (or 10 lower) than them.

If they`re in Bb, you`ll be in C. If they`re in C, you`ll be in D. If tehy`re in F, you`ll be in G. Get the idea?

A-B
Bb-C
B-C#
C-D
C#-Eb
D-E
Eb-F
E-F#
F-G
F#-Ab
G-A
Ab-Bb

HI. Hope you don`t mind me jumping in with a question, I just discoverd this great site. I`m a self-taught clarinetist, so there are lot of gaps in my knowledge. I bought a book of songs that happened to be arranged for piano and guitar, and a fingering chart for clarinet. I looked up the fingering for each note of the songs and learned the melodies.

What does it mean that a clarinet is Bb? When I play the `A` note (from the chart: T,I,II,III,IV,V), am I not hearing ~440 Hz?

I`d love to hear from anyone who could explain this in depth.

This one I do know about. When you play A on a Bb clarinet, it is actually playing B. When one plays an A on a piano, or any C instrument ie: the violin family, it IS A. I believe that this is correct. If not I hope someone will correct me !!! But, I do know that when I played my Bb clarinet and when I played with a piano, I had to play the clarinet up one full step. Therefore, when I played B, on a Bb clarinet, it was in tune with the piano when the piano played A. I just wanted to verify, that if I had a clarinet in key of C, that I would NOT need to transpose when playing with a piano or any violin or other C instrument. However, I have yet to get a reply....Russell

I just reread you post.....when you are playing A, the piano needs to play G to be in tune with you....however, most people who play the clarinet, actually do the transposing, unless the pianist is good at transposing.....but, whom ever I played with wanted me to do the transposing....(cause it is a lot easier to transpose one note ata time, when the pianist is playing several ata time.....Russell
