Hello, I was wondering if anyone here has some tips for transposing sheet music from Cello to bass clarinet. I'm assuming the cello part is in C, and it's Bass clef which i know roughly,.. but I need to transpose it to Bb treble clef. It is for my high school pit orchestra if your wondering. Really I just need to know how many steps up/down the treble notes would be from the bass, and i do know to take it down 2 octaves afterwards.

Any help would be appreciated.

Cello goes great on Bass clarinet, especially if you have a low-C horn.

3rd-line "D" for bass clef cello is 1st-line "E" on treble clef bass clarinet. Transpose everything up a whole step from Cello pitch, and add 2 sharps to the key signature, for example, if there are 3 flats in the Cello part, you would have just 1 flat in the bass clarinet key sig (sharps cancel flats).

You must have a horn with a low-D on it to play the Cello's lowest note, C.

Let me know if you have any questions, I'd be glad to help.

Heh I'm sorry, but I don't understand what you mean with the third line D and first line E comment.

I know bass clef and treble clef are this:
--A-- --F--
--F-- --D--
--D-- --B--
--B-- --G--
--G-- --E--
I thought that the bottom line of the staff, G would be my C (or maybe Bb) down 2 (maybe 1...) octaves.

I also ran into another problem... at measure 10 (in the Pit Orchestra music for "My Fair Lady",) it changes to Tenor Clef. My bassoon friend was trying to tell me what change i would have to make, but he was too busy trying to learn about 5 different solos in just the first 2 songs.

3rd line on the staff, 1st line on the staff. I'm counting up from the bottom of the staff. bass clef "d" is on the 3rd line, and treble clef E is on the 1st and lowest line on the staff, or the top space.

ohh I get it now heh, I think I was just tired yesterday.

I also realized that I don't have to figure out each note, because I'm going to be typing all the music into Finale and I could probably just select them all and hit the down arrow a few times.

But still, thanks for the help

Uhm... Ok so I got Finale installed and started putting the music in, but I ran into a problem. In the 10th measure, it changes to Tenor Clef, but when I put that in Finale, and played back the next few notes, they were so high that it just didn't play them. Should I just leave off the Clef Change? My bassoon friend I mentioned in my previous post said something like it just makes one note sharp or something, but he was too busy playing to say any more.

I'm not sure if this is what you're asking, but to read tenor clef, just remember that the fourth line is middle C. It's just used by bassoonists, cellists, trombonists, etc. to avoid having to deal with so many ledger lines.

if the tenor clef is too high when it's transposed, bring it down an octave.
