Poor person who asked the question about piano/clarinet. I would say clarinet is probably easier since it`s fewer notes and don`t have to read more than one note at a time. I learned it in less than a year. I play Bb (soprano) clarinet.
I have a question too, i know it`s probably stupid and the answer is probably no, but are the fingerings the same on each type of clarinet? like are the low e fingerings the same and stuff? thanks to whoever is kind enough to answer.

I played the Bass Clarinet in my school`s concert band and was lucky enough to have a brand new one the school had bought from the US.

(I live in Australia).

Bass Clarinet is awesome, you get heaps fun bass lines and sometimes very important parts of an arrangement. I loved it. Except for the slobber that builds up (other bass clarinetests will know what I mean lol!)

i know exactly what you mean. when i march with my bass clarinet it bubbles out all the time. also another sick thing is when you do a horns up and all the spit draines in your mouth. sick!

Yup! i totally agree with ur view! it really sucks! I have been playing the bass clarinet for 2 years now for my school concert band (I`m from Singapore). Once, after band practise, while about to keep my instrument, the saliva, or condensation as some might say, spilt all out!! My hands were wet with that liquid!! YUCKS! But i learnt something from my senior that when u play the bass clarinet, try not to move it too much, that way the "liquid" will not flow down the instrument that much...

I play bass clarinet, but unfortunately my band director thinks you can`t march with it, so I`m forced to play that awful soprano for football season. I hate it. I started to play bass two years ago, and afterwards picking up soprano again for this season has felt fake and wrong to me. Has anyone else noticed this? I almost quit band because of it, because I think that you should only do something for as long as the love for it is there, and I no longer loved band. But I stuck it out, waiting in agony for the concert season to begin so I could once more play bass. I love the instrument, it just feels so right to me when I play. My school uses Yamaha YCL-621 II`s, they`re great instruments. It`s so weird, nothing else fels right to me, except trumpet, which is doubly weird.

Mandy.. chill.. there`s nothin wrong with soprano clarinet. I play it for my concert band. There`s nothin wrong with bass clarinet either. I`ve played it in the past. Soprano clarinet isn`t as "awful" as you think. It`s just as signifigant as a bass. As long as you play soprano, you`ll get used to it. I know what you mean about wanting to play your major instrument though.

I`ve played a bass clarinet improvisation solo before. So much fun! I really enjoy playin bass. I`m normally given parts other than bass clarinet parts cos they`re boring.

I`m the only Bass Clarinet player in our marching band and I`m looking for a good solo to play at Solos & Ensembles in Spring. Any suggestions?
