I have played the Bass Clarinet, Contra-Alto Clarinet, and Contra-Bass Clarinet for almost 20 yrs now. The low clarinets, when played well, have a great tone that adds so much to the ensemble. Clarinet choirs are truly a thing to be heard...using Soprano, Alto, Bass, and Contra-Bass Clarinets all together.

As for Bass Clarinet solos...there are many...but at the same time, they aren`t common and are mostly found in very advanced pieces and orchestral transcriptions.

Now, as for Contra-Alto/Contra-Bass solos...there are almost NONE, BUT, i was fortunate enough when i was in the NJ All-State Band to play a Contra-Bass solo in a piece called "Festival Variations". There is also a Bass Clarinet solo in this piece.

Keep playing the low clarinets...they are great instruments and excellent additions to any group!

hi there,

just wanted to add... i played bass clarinet when i was in school. i stated out on alto for 4months then changed to bass 1 week before our christmas concert. bass sounded much more beautiful. the deep sounds. i always played a solo for our concerts. i`d have to look and see which songs i played. but have fun. (just looking to purchase one and get back into-just loved it so much.)

hi, ive just started playing the bass clarinet. I used to play the normal b flat clarinet so i know all the fingering. I was just wandering about how the bell is meant to face. is it meant to straight or on the side?

What model bass do you have... normally it is faced out in front of you.

my school owns Vito`s (not sure of the model) and you have to get it so the low Eb rod thing will make the note come out.

Good for you to switch... you will enjoy it!

I play both the bass and the contrabass in the local orchestra. Most contrabass clarinets curve back on themselves, so they`re about 3 feet long, but mines just a straight tube that`s bigger than i am, and i`m 5`9"
