My 13 years old nephew strains when playing the above instrument. Muscles and veins of his neck look strained as well as his eyes.

Is it normal?
I would be grateful for your help.

That doesn't really sound healthy... why don't you tell him to sit down and play in a relaxed position. You should not slouch, but still keep very relaxed.

Hope I helped.

Soft reed helps. My teacher recomended a Rico 1 1/2 or 2. Says it's easier than a Vandoran which I was using starting off.
