John McLoughlin, who is a guitarist of straight, alternative, weird and wonderful music, hollowed out the wood between the frets in order to get mini tones. It depends what you want. Go back to the old old clarinets before they were clarinets and they only had a few holes. Then little by little inovators added more and more holes and keys to cover them. What will the instrument look look in 100 years time. But check out the new electronic clarinets. Maybe you could programme them to plat 1/8 or 1/16 tones, or micro mine tones, etc.
