I found this avant-garde jazz musician on myspace named Ned Rothenberg, and one of his solo clarinet tracks blew me away. He seems to be using overtones to play polyphonicly or something. Theres parts in the recording where it seems there are up to three distinct notes playing at once. Some of the overtones are so high pitched, at first I thought he was manipulating feedback or something. I know next to nothing about clarinet technique/theory so forgive my layman's description.

Here is a link to his myspace page: http://www.myspace.com/nedrothenberg

The track in question is entitled "Color Wheel Solo Clarinet".

It may be far to experimental/noisy for some ears on this forum, but for those who would be willing to give the track a listen to help me out I would greatly appreciate it.

I'm really not sure what he's doing. And that's not really my style of music. Sorry.

Hi – interesting stuff – strangely calming and hypnotic. I'm not a clarinettist so i can't help you with any sound production tips, but you might follow up some of the links on this Wikipedia page: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Multiphonics

You should be able to find a fair bit on the net. Two Sydney-based players came to mind and it wasn't a problem hunting down these examples:

• Tony Gorman – check out "I Live with the Sea": http://profile.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=user.viewprofile&friendid=111565746
• Sandy Evans – I'm assuming she's on soprano sax here: http://www.jazz-planet.com/sandy/bytes/SET-SnakeGully.mp3
