And no, they aren`t made always of plastic. In fact I use the Vandoren A2 Crystal with a leather rovner ligature.

What about the 5RV-Lyre mouthpieces?? This one clarinet guru came to our school today and he checked out everyones mouthpieces. Mines a "no name" and he says I need to go to a harder reed but with the mouthpiece I have, it would be hard. I was wondering why I have sound problems..maybe thats it... I`m pretty sure that mouthpiece didn`t cost but like 5 or 10 bucks, I don`t think It came with the Yamaha origionally. I bought It used and who knows what the person before did. lol

Mouthpieces come in plastic, crystal, wood and rubber. Maybe even some more materials I don`t know about/haven`t mentioned.

Is it better to use a plastic ligature, metal, or fabric? I`ve seen a lot of ligatures so I dunno. I have a metal D. Bonade on a 5RV Lyre Vandoren (yeah I said that b4, sue me). I`m so lost

Vandoren mouthpieces are made of WOOD. Not plastic like you think. They are made of ebony, not plastic.

My Vandoren mouthpiece is made out of plastic, not wood. I found that out when my sister knocked my poor defective clarinet over and the mouthpiece got "chipped" but nothing broke off, just a little bit pushed back. It still sounds alright, but I thought I`d just mention that everyone I`ve spoken to hasn`t heard of a wooden mouthpiece. That wouldn`t make since anyway because the saliva would be right on the mouthpiece and eventually destroy the top of the mouthpiece. I don`t know. Maybe there is such a thing as a wooden mouthpiece, but I haven`t heard of one if there is.

Hi, this i smy second year playing the bass clarinet. I use a B40 mouthpiece and a BG traditional liagture (the gold plated one) and i use a Alexander Superial "Classique" size 3.5 reed. I think this is the best set-=up ever!!!1 Just the top of the instrument (the mouthpiece+ reed + ligature) cost me a whole S$225!!! But i dun mind the cost as long as i can help me in my clarinet playing... Any advice how i can improve on this setup???? Oh yeah.. I play a Buffet Prestige bass clarinet, it`s my school`s one. Have`tn saved enough to buy my own...

Ps. I`m from Singapore

New Vandoren mouthpieces are generally hard rubber, not wood, unless you recieved a custom mouthpiece or vintage. A great ligerature that I use is a Bay. Set up with a Gergory Smith Mouthpiece, a size 5 reed, and a Opus Leblanc Clarinet. I`ve spent tons of money on other mouthpieces and equipment and I swear by Gergory Smith and Leblanc. I have 4 clarinets!!! I currently attend Berklee College Music in Boston and if any of you young players need advise I`d be happy to share everything I`ve tried!!! Good luck, keep up the good work!
