I played oboe for approximately 8 years while growing up. I was very active and competitive in honors band while in high school, but I quit playing all together when I started college back in 2009.
I was going to keep playing through college by joining either my University's band or orchestra, but my parents talked me out of it, telling me it was a waste of time. Oh how I wish I never listened to them...
I am home on winter break, and I decided to dig out the old oboe. I only played for about 10 minutes, and my mouth went numb, I became light headed, and I could not physically force any more air into the reed. I'm not sitting here with a sore mouth and a bad headache.
What should I do to get get 'back into shape.' How long am I looking at here?
You'll be amazed how quickly it comes back to you. I quit playing, I thought forever, but 20 years later decided the oboe would be a good hobby for my retirement.
I've had an oboe for about a month and found a good reedmaker. I'm far from the player I once was, but things are progressing nicely.
Anything that helps you practice and improve your confidence is good.
