Hey,
i just want to ask everyones opinion on Selmer oboes, everyone says there so bad, But mine is perfect and i reckon the sound it make is wonderful, it can play every note and its real wood, not plastic. So what is the big problem with Selmer oboes, and in my school it has got many awards for best instrument.

So what is the problem?

I have a Selmer 101 (USA, wood, full conservatory). It`s at least 27 years old, and I got it new. It`s been sitting in my closet 20-some years, but I am playing again; and it is wonderful. I`d like to try a Loree or Yamaha 841 (who wouldn`t)? But I`m trying to live up to the saying, "Beware the woman with one oboe...she just might know how to play it."

Happy with my Selmer 101!

I played a Selmer oboe in school, as no doubt you`ve read elsewhere. It was first class all the way. Totally reliable, excellent materials and crafstmanship, and it even sounded good.

I was curious...I just purchased a used selmer oboe and it has the full conservatory key work, but it`s their plastic line. I`m hearing alot of mixed reviews here and I was just wondering if there is a difference between wood vs. plastic.

Also, does anyone know how to look up information about an instrument based on it`s serial number? I have that but I don`t have the exact model number. I have it narrowed down to two, but I don`t know how old it is to figure it out exactly. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

If you go to the selmer site (www.selmer.com) then you can email them with your serial number for the exact year. My Selmer oboe is also full conservatory, and also plastic (though higher grade than the student model) .. mine is a Selmer 104B (http://www.selmer.com/content/oboes_bassoons/101.php) if you look aroud the website you can see where you can email them info on your oboe to get info back and all that jazz. I think it`s an awesome oboe, if I do say so myself ~ Best of Luck

Thanks for the reply...I actually found the link on Selmer`s website where you can send them your serial number right after I posted my question. So, I`m now waiting to hear back from them. I was actually thinking mine was the 104b as well. It`s the only one that I see that has the full conservatory key work, but is made of plastic. If you don`t mind me asking...how old is your instrument? Mine is obviously older due to the case it`s in.

I was glad to hear you say you really liked your instrument...I would call myself a hobbist oboe player at best...I played in high school and sold my instrument after that...so it`s been years since I played (I had a plastic then wooden Linton oboe) I just hope this is an upgrade from what I was used to.

Thanks again

Actually, I got mine off of ebay and they said that it was only a few months old. I would guess this to be true because it is in very nice condition with no real marks or scuffs or anything that would come from regular practicing.
