I have been playing the bassoon since december of 2004 but my primary instrument is flute. My director was listening to a tape of a concert we did with a major bassoon solo that I had to play and he came up to me a few days ago and said that I sounded great on bassoon and that I should consider auditioning for a scholarship on bassoon since its rediculously hard to get them with flute. What are some of your opinions? Im a little scared to try. haha.

I was wondering also, that if you did bassoon/oboe for high school and joined some symphony orchestra, would you be able to get some scholarship? If so, how? Like auditioning like the person above, or would you have to play the instrument through university and then get scholarships.

Most of the scholarships I have seen on the college/university level for bassoon and oboe have been given to people only after they have auditioned and have been accepted to the college. For a school a couple hours away from me, i know they give bassoonists that audition and get accepted to the school an automatic scholarship of like $1000, since good bassoonists are hard to come by, I was offered one of these scholarships to this particular school, but unfortunetly most of these scholarships are of a very miniscule amount, like the 1000 one for example....hope this helps, other schools may operate like this one does.

I have been playing Bassoon since 03, and I play with The South Coast Youth Symphonic Orchestra. My instructor has talked to me,also, about getting a scholarship. But I don`t know how much it would be, or if it would be enough. I`m in 7 bands right now as a freshman in high school, I play trombone in the Jazz Band at Mission Viejo High School, Euphonium in the marching band running for Drum Major, Trombone/Bassoon in the Wind Ensemble.(I switch from time to time) And Bassoon in SCYSO. I am trying to find info on scholarships right now...

It really depends on what school you are trying out at. If it`s primarily a performance school, I would say go for the instrument you are stronger on, which seems like it would be flute. Good bassoonists are hard to come by, but there are still zillions of them out there. If you are going for an ed. degree at a school that is primarily for ed., I would go with the bassoon, because they most likely won`t have as many people trying out.
