Many fine trumpet players are our favorites, from Wayne Bergeron to Maynard Ferguson to Chet Baker. Write in and tell me your favorite! P.S. Toptrump04 you better be in on this! I've seen your stuff and you're a fantastic musician!
Hey thanks a lot jazzytrumpetkid. I just recently saw Wayne myself and his is definitely one of my favorite players. I think that over all, I prefer the sound and style of Doc Severenson. Something about that old-time sound is really appealing to me.
Allen Vizzutti. Definitely. He's like a freak of nature. Makes everything he plays seem absolutely effortless. I've seen him play live and the only time I've seen any trace of strain on his face was when he played like a quadruple G above the staff and hold it for five minutes. He's a beast.
Thanks guys! I'm gonna try that Allen Vittuzi. I've never heard of him before. I personally am a Wayne Bergeron fan. I also like Chet Baker when he's not singing and Louis Armstrong (same story).
This is such a great topic...I don't know why there aren't many posts. Maybe if we all just start replying with "I'm my own favorite trumpet player!" we could get something going.
Hey im going to go with Louis Armstrong. He's really cool when he plays.Does anyone know how to start a post because im looking for people to join a Jazz Band but i cant find a trombonist or a drummer in my area. I lie in cenla LA.
Oh, about your band thing... you go to the "Forums" main page. There should be a little button on the right that says "New Post" or something. Hit that. Happy trumpeting!
For the classics, it's got to be Maurice Andre. No one can do Baroque the way he can. Everything he does is flawless. You should hear him play Hummel's "Trumpet Concerto" in E-flat major. Amazing!
For purity of technique, it has to been Rafael Mendez. That cat was the most amazing technician I ever heard - again, always flawless. His "Flight of the Bumble Bee" outdoes everyone else I have ever heard play it - mee included! I think there are some videos of him on You Tube.
For beauty in the upper register, I'd go with MF, although Jim Morrison's a close second.
Improv is between Mike Vax and Clark Terry (old blues coronet player).
For flat-out weird time changes and unusual arrangements for brass, it has to be Don Ellis.
I like Wynton Marsalis' tone and the way he does the instructional videos is what made me the trumpet player that I am. (3-time all-state and 4-state 1st band)
