Ok so today I played with a guy who chose to wear lip balm while he played. He said it helped him to not get dry mouth, which I sometimes get when I get worn. I decided to give it a try, and it was horrible! The mouthpiece was slipping all over the place and it was just a bad experience. I guess the point of this point is to say, "How can you guys actually play with this stuff on your face?" Anyone else do this?

hey I try that sometimes when my lips feels very dry. It works for me. Don't feel any difference in my playing ability, though.

Here's a tip from an old dog who has had to play literally for hours - when the chops turn to hamburger or start to get chapped and red and puffy, a little Campho-phenique does wonders. We used to call it liquid lip, and I still keep a small bottle in a baggie in my gig bag, just in case.
It only takes a very small amount on your lips, applied with your finger. Let it set for a minute or so, then dab the excess off with your drip towel. It conditions the epithelium (lip skin), and has a slight local anesthetic effect.
Give it a try - I'd like to know how it works for you.

Er.. i've played with it before but it was a last resort cause i had a concert that night and my lips weren't buzzing from how chapped they were. I had a hard time getting the notes out so i dont really like it too much

I like to play with it on but my band director told me not to use some with alot of medicine in it. He said it will hurt me alot more at the end of the marching band season. I dont know if it is true but i dont i try to use all natural lip balm. There is some stuff they sale at music stores called chop saver it works but i only used it once but my friends sayes it is great. Give that a try.

Well Toptrump04 I'm on your side. To me playing with lip balm on it retarted. You can never stay in the same spot on the mouthpiece and it takes way too much effort to use.

first of all what is Campho-phenique? well anyway if your lips slide with lip balm try a little dab of olive oil it'll keep your lips moisturized because it's a oily fondation that doesn't slip while it's on your lips. just rub little as possible on your lip.

I played with some on one day and it distracts me a lot. It was all over my mouth piece and I was not really happy with the result. Sometimes, if needed, I will put some on and then dab a lot of it off. Just so I have a minimal amount on.

i like using chapstick when i play. my lips stick to the mouthpiece kinda without it and it's uncomfortable, though i have to put it on a few minutes before i play otherwise it is a little too slippery. this may just be a resust of my addiction to chapstick, though, lol . or because i only play brass for marching band, and the sun dries out my lips a lot too. i also like burts bees and i think it's less slimey, but i seem prone to losing that, and theres always new chapsticks in the kitchen drawer when i lose mine.
