My toddler is 2 and a half. He loves music and I am keen to introduce him to a musical instrument, I think he would love to play the trumpet, is this realistic ? or is he too young ? I may attempt to learn myself so I can encourage him.
Thanks in advance

the amount of air i would imagine it takes to get a soud out of a trumpet would be a bit much so he might get discouraged by the fact it takes him alot of effort to get a squeak, the best thing to do would be to buy a cheap plastic recorder and give him a go at that nd once he can get a sound easily by blowing try and rent a trumpet for a few weeks so he can try. but the fact he is so and he will fid it hard to breth may be discourageing, also if he finds a trumpt and bit large then he could try a cornet.

I would recommend teaching him piano first. It is somewhat easier to teach someone notes and rhythms on a piano than a trumpet. If you don't want to teach him on a full-size, get him a cheap, one octave keyboard. He can start learning on that. However,if you really want him to try to learn trumpet now, rent one for a few weeks and see how it goes, but I really think piano is the best way to go.

I have often heard that starting too early on brass instruments can be detrimental to the development of the embouchure (I would tend to agree). I think you should start your child off with a piano or some other instrument that doesn't require fully developed muscles just to play. That way he can learn about music without being discouraged by slower progress. Wow I almost forgot we were talking about a 2.5 year old here. Might want to see how he likes preschool first. Haha..sports are good too

Go ahead and learn yourself. Then you can teach him when he's 8 or 9 years old. However, DO NOTlearn wrong. Then you'll both be in a bad spot when you decide to teach your child to play, passing on your bad habits. As I said before, teach him piano! And adding to what TopTrump04 said, throw a ball around in the yard with him, read him a story or something.
