If you go onto Bach`s website, they have a very detailed descriptions on different sizes mouthpiece, such as what kind of tone would a 3C make..etc

Here`s another link to their mouthpiece brochure, this would answer all your questions related to different mouthpieces, such as what is the different between a thinner rim or a thicker rim; or deeper cup and a shallow cup.

note: this is a pdf document, you need acrobat reader to view this.

don`t switch. a new mouthpiece mught sound good a t first but it would destroy your muscles and you`d have to build up again

7C is the basic beginner mouthpiece size. As you progress you want to move to larger mouthpieces. If you play on a Bach mouthpiece and want another one, test a 5C and a 3C. If you are just playing symphonic music, stay away from shalow mouthpieces. They will hurt your overall tone, even if they help improve your high range endurance. You will want to settle on a mouthpiece size eventually. Bach is designed so that once you get into the larger intermediate sizes (2.5 to 5) you can move onto a final mouthpiece by dividing that number by two. Example: you play a 3C, you will want to end up on a 1.5C. You may want to try a deeper, larger mouthpiece, which will be harder to play high on, but as you develop more facial muscles, the range will come back, along with a better tone from the larger mouthpiece. Look at an A or B cup for Bach then. Finally, if you want a really nice mouthpiece, look into a Monette or a Gary Radtke. These are about as good as they get for trumpet mouthpieces.
