every mute gives a differnet sound or tone. A plunger gives a specific sound, which is the most popular mute in my opinion. I personally use a Jo Ral Cooper Bubble Wawa mute, because it gives a better sound then an aluminum. Although theses arent cheap mine cost me 125 Canadian. But i also use Stone lined stright, which i really dont like the sound it creates. Personally mutes are like trumpets, you have to play them to find out which you like. My friend Luke perfers his Harmon mute, yet i perfer my Ro Jal. So go down to a music store and play all the mutes they have, find what mute is sounds best for the sound you are trying to get.

You dont need lots of mutes, you only need mutes that will give you the sounds you want to produce. For example, i use plunger (or a crushed beer can if i cant find a plunger on stage) and a Jo Ral Cooper Bubble WaWa for that vintage sound. Thats for me, everyone will need to produce different sounds. So you need to find what works for you.

question.... what are bubble mutes and solotone mutes?

first of all wondering on bubble mutes b/c we have an arrangement on Soul Finger in jazz band that calls for `bubble 1 & 3`, we assumed that it just meant trill like, but you mentioned a bubble mute, jw if there`s a connection

and the solotone mute was mentioned in our musical book for the pit, no one knew what it was.

thanks for answers!
