If you are playing lead when you play jazz, and that is mostly what you plan to play, you should buy a smaller bore horn. If you play lower parts, or have a strong embouchre and want to play symphonic music too, go with a larger bore. For $900 Canadian, you can`t get a new pro horn, but you could get a used horn. The Getzen you were looking at is only a student model, and if you get a used pro model horn, you would have a much better instrument. If you want a true lead horn, look at the King 2Bs and the Yamaha 690 series as well as the Getzen 3000 series jazz horns. For a lead horn, you want a bore size areound .48 to .50 inches. if you want a larger horn, you might want to consider a medium large bore, possibly with an F attatchment. These horns can still be used for jazz and lead, but require a bit more effort to play high for a long time. The great thing about them is that they are good for symphonic work too. Check out the Yamaha 684 series and the King 3Bs. Getzen also makes a lower end pro model (the 1000 series) that has this size. If you get a horn without being able to play it first (such as eBay) I would highly reccomend going with a Yamaha because they are very consistent, reliable and very good as well. If you can test play the horn, you might want to look at Bach Stradivarius models. Most Bach instruments are terrible, because the Bach factory has no quality control, but every now and then you can find a good one. Make sure if you are buying a Bach that you test play it first and make sure you like it. My last bit of advice is this: get the horn you like, not what someone else tells you to get. The horns I have listed are all good, but maybe not what you want. Don`t listen to anyone who tells you that you need a certain type of horn, but you may want to consider people who have valid reasons for not liking certain horns. In the end, the decision is yours, and you are the one who has to live with your choice in an instrument. Make sure the horn you buy is one that you really like, and good luck.

I played in high school and college 30 years ago or so and recently decided to buy a trombone again just for the hell of it. I played a bunch of new ones in stores and wasn`t impressed so I bought old ones. I ended up buying eight of them (at least one will become a lamp). I like small and medium bore tenors and play jazz and never play in a section and am really a piano player so take my advice with a grain of salt.

The one I`m keeping for sure is a `56 Conn 6H. It`s kind of blatty and blare-y and bright but still expressive and flexible. Very responsive. I love Conn horns.

The `58 Olds Super: When I first played it I said "oh, yeah" (actually it sounded more like "mm ymmh" because I was playing trombone at the time). It has a more distinctive sound than the Conn--sort of dark and sweet, but responds just as fast. It has an amazing slide--the inner tubes look round but if you look close they`re 12-sided. The bell has a nickel ring at the rim which is supposed to do something or other and anyway looks neat. It sort of has that Tommy Dorsey sound which isn`t surprising because it`s a similar dual bore horn. Old Olds trombones are the most underrated horns on the planet.

1941 Bach Strad Model 6:
I have to sell this one because it deserves a real trombone player and it`s in such good shape that I`ll &#@%! it up more in one gig than in the last 60 years. Very refined smooth tone, very easy to play, just a lovely horn. Built like fine jewelry.

Getzen "The Dude":
I bought this for the wild looks. All the bell bracing is thin solid hexagonal metal instead of tubing, and it`s bent into semi-circles. There`s a ring for your thumb to hold the bell section. It actually plays very well--a little more mid-rangy and nasal than the Conn but very fun to play. I bought two of these (never drink while on eBay) and will keep one for a spare horn. I bought a couple of Getzen Super Deluxe trombones which look beautiful but they`re still in the shop so I`ll let you know if they`re any good or not.

I played a King 3B SilverSonic in school which I didn`t care for but it must be a great horn because lots of trombonists who can kick my butt play it. I haven`t played a King lately but I`m looking for one.

As far as the lacquer issue, I had the Conn stripped and I think it sounds better but couldn`t swear by it. The Olds horn confirms Bobert`s theory that lacquer seals in corrosion because there`s red rot under the lacquer on the bell rim which my horn guy says was caused by lacquering in hot humid weather (almost fifty years ago!). If I keep it I`ll strip off the lacquer.

Anyway, the Conn won my heart because it fits my style of playing and doesn`t have such a distinct sound that makes me play the same way all the time. You guys who say one brand of horn is great and the other ones suck are just nuts. There are a lot of wonderful horns out there. Please try some old ones, and maybe some weird ones.

This is looking more like a novel than a post; I`ll sign off.

I own a 2004 Morelli Silver Trombone. It`s very nice and has a bright tone. I am tryin to sell because I need the money. Anyone interested? Has a used mouth piece and has only been used a couple of times. I am asking $200 since I bought it new for $250. Comes with case, white gloves, yellow wipe cloth, used mouth piece, a barely used trombone, and a very nice case. The case has a couple of white marks from paint, it came that way, and is missing a plastic foot, so now a screw sticks out? Email for pics.

I agree with dustin try befor you buy. I have been looking for almost a year trying to find the perfect horn. i have played everything but the shires. ( just got a catalog) I am holding ou ttill i can play one. But here is hte deal """I like a (insert what ever brand you want here) because there the best """ is not a good reason to buy a horn. What kind of experience do you have what kind of music you going to play where you going to play. Honestly how good are you. How long are you going to play. All thease questions need to be part of your purchase. Id buy a con 88hcl-0-gsx for my self right now but that doesnt meen you should. Ok well now that i have added absolutily nothing to this thread, if all else fails try sleeping with the neighbors wife. that always helps.

Topics like these go on FOREVER!!! when it comes down to it how you play and how you want to sound! but we do all have personal preference and mine will have to be the getzen/edwards. at this moment i have a Edwards T350 and a B454 both of them customized to me and i couldnt be happier. these horns blow REALLY open and when i want them to i make them snap harder than anything you can imagine. which i just absolutely love. but on the other hand i cant take my edwards tenor into jazz bands and play lead because it doesnt snap the dude in the last rows head open the way id like it too. Although i have been playing my Edwards in some big bands that im doing i would LOVE to purchase a King 2B, hopefully a liberty silver tone or a silver sonic. These horns play so amazing in a jazz setting. ya, personal preference over rules what the popular brand is. I hear a few fellas on here who knock jupiter horns and whatever no name brands but i have friends who can play those horns and sound like they are playing a 3000 dollar edwards. im just going to keep telling people this, dont settle until youve tried every horn on the market!

Also is anyone selling a King 2B? a liberty silversonic or a silvertone is also a plus!

not eVERYBODY soudns good on a edwards though. I have seen a friend of mine with a custom made edwards(tailored for him) who just didnt like the horn. he said it felt great, but it didnt improve on his sound at that point.

Although i just LOOOOOVE my tailored edwards bass and tenor... but you know, not everybody wears a size 9 shoe.
