Hi,

I want to record myself playing a solo that I am preparing for. Many teachers have recommended this technique. Do you guys have any tips on recording?(mics, disk format, etc.) I have a mac with garageband, so that may be of some help.

Thanks!

I use a tape player, it makes everything sound horrible, so you think you suck and try harder. If you want a good representation of your sound, then don't use a tape player.

Back in college, when I did this all the time, I used to use a Mini Disc recorder. It was small and simple, and actually sounded pretty good, and went straight into my computer at home.

If you can find one, that would be the simple thing to do.

if you have a computer, a cheap mic and some cheap rercording software (i believe you can find free downloads out there on the web) can do the trick.

Good point Steve. I should have clarified. The Mini Disc recorder was for recording myself out, such as practicing at school. At home I would use just the computer and a mic.

Make sure you levels aren't peaking. Play close to the mic. I've been experimenting this week for a good sound. Garageband is Ok. ProTools is better (an any Pro Audio program! Learning how to EQ is important too.
