I'm in a program through my school to help out with the new musicians. The problem that we're currently having is the slur. I told them to just use a light Da tongue, or a la; whatever I could think of that could get them an idea of what I want (which is just a cleanish slur, or just evidence that they understand what to do and work on). How would you/ what would you do to describe how to do this? The teacher is a trumpeter and doesn't know much on this particular topic. Help would be much appreciated

Well, my way is
Lip slur when possible (notes on different partials)
Da or la if lip slur impossible (notes on same partial) or if it simply sounds better.

Of course when talking lip slurs, you can also explain the proper way to do them, using tongue position to change the speed of the air instead of lip pressure.
