Yes... similar to trumpet, those mouthpieces with smaller rims, cups, throats will be able to help you play higher notes. It will also give you a different sound and your lower notes will suffer... they will be harder to play.

The most common mp is the 6AL. There are different types of mouthpiece such as the heavytops which is heavier and u`ll be able to hit high otes easier.

I assume you want the Bach mouthpiece sizes.

The mouthpiece that trombone players start out with is usually 6 1/2 AL.

As a lead jazz player, that mouthpiece works well for me to hit all the high notes I ever need to play. Sometimes I use a 7C which is even smaller than the 6 1/2 AL. Most of the time though, I use a non-Bach mouthpiece.

Ok here is what you need to know about mouth pieces and range. there are only a relitive few partials you are going to use while playing. and you can hit all of them with any mouthpiece if you work at it. Whimping out to an easier mouth piece well that is just that whimping out. Ok so maby your going to do like a high note contest then what you want is somthing with a relitive shallow cup and a smaller diameter than you normally play with. somthing with a small back bore is also good. Joe marcinkewitz( blew that one sorry joe) makes some really good custom pieces. I have cheeted my self with one of his. Ok so that is the story and as you know, If that doesnt work , try sleeping with the neighbors wife.

i use a twelve C. i don`t know what that is. i play first trombone in my jazz band and i have braces on. so i find it very difficult to hit the higher notes. i am able to hit high F without a problem. but anything higher and i just fumble. so I was wondering if a different mouth peice would help.

The 12C is already one of the smallest mouthpieces out there. If you want to be able to play higher, you just need to practice in that range. I understand it is difficult to play with braces because I had to wear them all through high school. By having braces and practicing with them, I built up my endurance, so just keep practicing.

braces..... Ok here is what you need get a huge mouthpiece. Like a 4 1/2 or even a 4. Do you use wax? it will help with the braces and any pain you might have. so here is what you do. work your lip slurs with the huge mouthpiece and you will build range quickly(over a couple months) youll add one then two then even 3 partials to what you have now. the 12 c is really small, a few years ago i was in your shooes at that time a friend of mine said get the biggest mouthpiece you can comfortably play (with braces) and just slurr slurr slurr. It has helped. now the braces are off and i have one of the best ranges around. Also the large mouthpiece will help you to devlope good tone and really force you to suppoprt correctly. Good playing and good sleeping with the neighbors wife or maby daughter in your case.

The smallest Bach mouthpiece I know of is a Bach 22. The largest is a Bach 1G.

This will not help you because choosing the wrong equipment will just discourage you. There are many factors in choosing a mouthpiece. What bore horn do you play on? What size do you play on now? How old are you? How long have you been playing? What is your skill level... and being first chair at school doesn`t necessarily mean that you`re good. Have you auditioned for any region/district bands?
