Got trombone and met teacher for first time.

He doesn`t want me to touch the horn at all. First I`m supposed to just practice breathing exercises until I can breath in for 15 counts at 60 and blow air for the same amount of time (starting out at 1 count in and 1 count out).
Then, I`ll "graduate" to buzzing with just my lips and matching notes on a piano. Finally, I`ll get to use a mouthpiece.
After that I can touch a horn.
What kind of experiences have the rest of you had out there? When my big brother began, his teacher just told him to blow on the horn until some sounds came out and went directly to scales.

i have seen teachers do this befor. It helps set a great foundation for tone quality. you will build range faster and your tone will be more dynamic because of it. It may seem slow going at first but give your self a week or two of this kind of stuff and you will be miles a head when you finaly use your ax to make noise.

If your paying him for this kind of stuff you shouldnt do it for more than a couple lessons and you need to practice it durring your off time. you can breath any where.
