I`m new to the scene and thinking about talking lessons from a 1st chair orchestra trombonist. He wants $100/hour. That sounds about right for someone in his position. How much would just a "normal pro" charge?

Lessons tend to run from about $20 an hour (for maybe an advanced highschool or college student as the teacher) to hundreds of dollars for the top players. Depending on your current ability, you can find the right teacher. Also, don`t pay good money to get a lesson by a jazz teacher if you want to play classical, or a classical lesson if you want to play jazz. I would guess the average price for lessons is probably between $40 and $50 an hour.

Yea but how much does it cost for you to go to CSULB =)..

For MOST lessons with pros such as orchestra players 100 is pretty average. It doesnt get much better. Heres the thing though dont take the lessons with him if YOU dont think your ready to. Sometimes taking lessons with someone maybe not so prestigious is smarter if your not at the level to take lessons with a Pro.

Also remember, just because they are in a Orchestra doesn`t mean they are good teachers!!

Good luck!! getting the right teacher is VERY important in your playing.

Wow, thanks all the advice. Maybe I`ll just see if I can hook up with someone at a university.
