Okay, so I just got a new violin, and it's got dominant strings, as opposed to the steel strings on my old violin... about how often do dominants have to be changed?
Thanks ^_^;

Mine usually last about 6 months, sounding at their best, but sometimes they last longer or less, depending how much you use them, n the humidty and stuff!

Thanks bunches That gives me sorta an idea of when to start paying attention to if they need to be changed or not.. which is a start. Thanks again =)

Hey, riding on this thread... I just got a set of Thomastik Vision. It is aluminium/silver wound with synthetic core. Anyone has any experience with this?

Novice, I haven't tried the brand of strings you are inquiring of, but I do know that (for me at least) synthetic core strings have a shorter life-span than, say, Dominant strings because they stretch out much quicker. Some people really like them because although you have to change them more often (say every 2 months? sometimes more frequent the more you play), they are 'broken in' much quicker and have a beautiful sound!

Yes, I fitted them on my son's 1/8 violin and the sound is really good. Even on such a small violin, the G string sounds really big! But 1 question, when do you know it's time to change?

How I know when it's time to change strings are when my violin doesn't ring as well as it normally does, if the strings aren't as responsive, if the tone is duller, but the biggest is if the strings come out of tune really easily (this is a different time from when you are breaking them in...you will be able to tell the difference) and they just feel loose
