So I'm going away for the summer, but when I get back in August I'm starting violin lessons. I have no previous music training. I mean, there was some piano when I was like 7, and if you put a few notes in front of me I can tell you what they are if you give me a few minutes. Having said that, I was wondering if there was anything I could do before I start taking lessons that will kind of prepare me. Should I start learning to read music on my own? Just looking for advice!
Basicly, I'd learn the names of the notes in the treble clef (the clef used for the violin) - EGBDF ('Every Good Boy Deserves Fruit' is a good way to remember this) for the lines, and FACE for the spaces. Also, just do a little research on the violin (wikipedia.org is a good place to start), and MAYBE pick what style of music you want to play, but classical is the best way to start. GOOD LUCK!
Listen to classical music! Get your ear ready for the type of music you will be playing. Find some good classical music cds at the library, solo violin music, orchestral, etc.
