I'm a pretty new violin player, about 3 months in and I just picked up the book, "Daily Scale Exercises for violin"
It gives examples with numbers above the notes, they seem to be 0-4, obviously this must correspond 0 for open, 1-4 for which finger to use. The problem is not all the notes on a scale are numbered. For example the G Scale. The first G has a 0 below it, (must mean open string), then there are no numbers for the next 14 notes, until the scale reaches the first A note above the staff which has a 1 above it. Then again the next note has nothing, then there is a 1 over the next C, then 2 notes of nothing, then the next two have 4 above them.
If someone could enlighten me on what the numberings mean and how you would play through this scale I would be most appreciative.
Sounds like they put the numbers above the first few notes to make sure you got the concept, but then left them off in the hopes you wouldn't still need them. I wouldn't worry about it - just use the fingerings you learned.
Seems like you have encountered a scale that goes quite high.
You should play in the first position until the 1 is suggested above the A note. You should switch position there so that you play that note in the third position with your 1:st finger. Continue in the third position. The several fours suggest that you should try to reach the highest note with your pinkie without moving your whole hand from the third position. Don't hurt your hand doing that.
Going down is usually easier. Good luck. I hope this was helpful

edit: missed the 1 above the C lol. Seems like 3:rd position isn't enough... you gotta go to the 5:th... but otherwise it's the same
alas, I think such high scales are a bit tricky for someone who has played for only 3 months, but you can always try:)
Thank you for all the replies and thank you Lotta_A for explaining. It makes sense now. I agree I think it is a bit advanced for me, but as I learn the positions, I'll add in the bigger scales
