I have trouble with changing from string to string. Sometimes when I change strings I play them both at once. I asked my violin teacher how to not do it, but she just gives me some cryptic message like play more lightly or be careful. Anyone have any tips?
I'd say just practice going back and forth Sometimes when I change strings I end up hitting another on accident and I think the best thing you can do is just to practice going back and forth between different strings You'll get the hang of it soon!
You most likely have your elbow in the wrong position - work out exactly how high/low you need your arm to be to play a specific string and just keep correcting it every time you start to go wrong.. eventually it should become second nature
Sorry, you said changing strings - same thing really, you're most likely keeping your elbow in the same position when you go to the next string. Make sure that as you change string you change the angle of your arm at the same time.
Start off by being mechanical, i.e. play one string, the D for example, stop and shove your elbow down. That should automatically put your bow at the correct angle and onto the A, then play the A. Keep practising like that and it should come.
Practice your open strings over and over. Play long notes, then short notes and maybe try a few rhythms. Do this in a mirror to be sure you're bowing straight (parallel to the bridge) and spend at least 10 minutes daily warming up this way. Then move into your scales and in time, you will learn to hit only one string at a time. All it takes is patience and practice and some day you will look back and wonder why you ever had trouble.
I had a similar problem and it turned out my bridge was fitted wrong.

Yes, I had that problem as well, so if the exercises don't fully help then get it checked out.. carry on the exercises though even if the bridge is faulty - I played on a faulty bridge for over a year, and the extra hard practise really paid off when it was fixed
