The first position is when your first finger makes the tunes A/Ab on the G string, E/Eb on the D string, B/Bb on the A string and F/F# on the E string - the first position is the most common position in violin music and the position you learn to play first. When you play in third position you move your hand so that your first finger is placed where your third finger is placed in first position. Third position makes the sound softer and allows you to play higher notes than you can play in first position. For example, the D on the A string is played with a third finger in first position and with the first finger in third position.
There are also other positions, like the second position, where your first finger is placed where your second finger normally is.
Hope this helped!
