Will it suffice to play an etude with mostly triplets, at 132 bpm for a piece that is meant to be played presto. Playing the piece, faster than that is out of my reach, so I was wondering if this would suffice.

Suffice for what? If you think a piece sounds right at a particular speed then it is right. If on the other hand you are playing it at that speed because you can't play it any faster then it will probably sound slow to the listener. On the other hand if you are playing it as a study then it will do you no good at all to give up before you are playing it at the right speed because when you join an orchestra and have, say, Abu Hassan to play then you will have to go at the sppeed the conductor says or else. If you cant play at the right speed then these things happen and you will have to keep practicing until you can play it. You will be a better play for it. Finally, if your teacher says different then that overrules anything said here anyway.

For practice play the piece at a speed that you can play all the notes correctly. Play it through at least 3 times each day. Memorise the harder parts. In time your pace will quicken. I started many of the fiddle pieces I play at a very slow 60 bpm, and can now play them at 200 + bpm, and have memorised them in the process. It takes time and practice. It's a heck of a lot of fun to play along with a sound track after you learn the piece. Jesu with all it's slurs and 3rd posistion parts challenged me at maybe 40 bpm when I started learning it. Now I can play along with a sound track no problem, but it took weeks to get it down that well.
