Getting on a bit judging by the replies lol, been playing since I was nine, still rubbish !!, a fellow left hander, makes the fingering easier, havent picked the old cello up for a bit, its hard getting the sheet music for a good solo piece.

Number one I`ve been playing the cello for eight years, started at 12 am now 20 and I AM A RIGHT HANDER. OH!!! and talking to Chelsey 3rd from the top and Number 2, I am a better cellist that Yo Yo Ma ever was.:-)
By the way, how can someone start playing the cello or any instrument for that matter at such a young age (like 3) and be a so called expert by the age of 8? HA! If someone gets tutored all the time by an expert a lot and also gets taught to play at school, then why dont they ever play good, but I have never been tutored and I can play everything fine. Most of my teachers have always looked at the tutored kids as being better players than everyone else no matter what which made me soo angry, thats why I have always actually played the hardest level six pieces I can find like "Flight Of The Bumble-Bee" to pester everyone like that.

Starting to learn to play the cello very early doesnt mean that someone wil be a fantastic cello player, maby it can. :-)

First of all, a child who`s taught young gets the advantage of a fresh mind. just like they say that young children can learn more foriegn languages than adults or even older kids; the same thing most likely applies for playing the cello.
Secondly, learning an instrument just from school is nowhere near the whole experience. learning cellists should have private teachers (i guess that`s what you mean by tudors) once they reach a certain point. school playing is very very general and can`t be oriented to the individual and their needs. playing in only a school orchestra can`t make people advance very far.
people who start playing very young should not automatically assumed to be an expert; but it must be taken into consideration that they are probably very comfortable with the instrument and can play with an advantage on some others. there are also those crazy prodigies out there...
ok enough rambling...email me if ya wanna talk or somethin

Your probably right with the first thing you said, but it`s kind of funny how the prodigies are really young. When I was around the 10 and under range I didn`t care about the cello or studying math, science, or social, studies; none of it mattered to me. If I CARED for studying at the age of three I would be a crazy prodigy too.
:-)
Like I said, I have never had a private teacher and I can play any sheet of music within a month or two perfectly without any help. In middle school I didn`t play very well, high school was a lot better, in other words I self taught my self with almost no help from my teachers. Actually, my high school and middle school teacher (the same person) was and still is the best viola player in Georgia which is the reason why I had such a good teacher to learn from. :-)

To me learning an instrument just isn`t that hard.

I once heard of a violin player that put the violin in the right hand and bow on the left and got popular and rich from doing that. I tried to play with the bow in my left hand and cello in my right, that was fun, it wasnt very hard doing that. But the problem is that cellos aren`t made to be played that way. For a person to play a cello in reverse, someone would have to make the mirror image of a regular cello. There`s a brace in cellos, (under the right leg of the bridge) that holds up the G and C strings and the sound post to hold up the cello from collapsing. If some one swiched the strings, the cello would probably collapse, even with the sound post. :-)

Why does everybody start playing at such a young age like at 8 or younger, is it because of parents? I started playing at 12 in Middle school in the 6th grade, but presently, 20/M/U.S.A./(Georgia).

they start playing young because their parents are smart and realize the impact of starting to play an instrument young. that`s all

I`ve started 3 years ago, and now I`m playing the Haydn`s concerto for cello and orchestra No. 1 in C major, and trust me, it`s very very very difficult, but not for me, I`m very good on this... And I`m also playing the 34th etude form... Popper! And also the bach`s 6th suite fromn unaccompanied cello!
