I think they are called simply tuning machines or geared tuners or something like that.

You had it right the first time. They're called "fine tuners", and you'll need to see a cello technician if you want your cello to have them and it doesn't already. (Where, by the way, means at what place, and thus the phrase "where to buy them at" is redundant. Next time just say "where to buy them". Thanks.)

I figured as much with the name but as for having someone else install them, I wouldn't need that. I built my cello myself so reamming the holes and all the other things isn't much of a challenge. I actually just got a set of "fine tuners" and also a perfect set of caspari friction lock pegs.

I can handle working on electric instruments but I wouldn't want to ever have to work on an acoustic cello; especially one of those ones that cost $30,000! I was surprised about the rareness of these fine tuners for cellos. I got an old set but I think what I am going to do is put a set of guitar tuners on for a bit of a more modern look. I like the Caspari pegs I got but I have no real use for them seeing I mostly wanted the geared tuners so the pegs could never slip again while also making tuning easy. Does anyone know what Caspari friction pegs are worth used in excellent condition?

Check out http://www.pegheds.com They are geared pegs that don't slip and look just like traditional pegs. I found them while looking at http://www.luisandclark.com who makes cellos out of carbon fiber. They use them and I have seen a violin with them on there and there is no pushing in on them to make sure they don't slip. Just turn a little and let go. Neat.

Hi Steven
I have been building a cello (although it has a traditional scroll/neck) and also hit upon fixing bass machine heads on (to avoid the need for fine tuners at the bottom tail piece) - but looking up string tensions there seems to be no reason why I might not use decent guitar tuners rather than bass tuners, but I am not a music technician - I wondered if you had an opinion about that? Its just that the disadvantages with bass tuners so far are their weight and requirement for a significantly wider piece of wood to connect to that the existing scroll, if you know what I mean.
Thank you !
