I dont know if this is advanced or not.. but ive been playing for a year in September `04 . Im not going to an art school, and i figured everyone there would be really good, and things like that. But i was wrong, atleast compared to me. Im in the 7th grade and i can already play La Music, and Mozart in G. and many other things, but i dont know virbrato yet. Im concerned because everyone in my class cant play these peices, even though theyve been playing for 3 years. So can you help me figure out if im just ahead or if they are behind?

I don`t know, your skills can change awful fast. I remember a young cello player who was practically an expert after a year of playing, but that’s because he has someone (a tutor) to constantly tell him what he was doing wrong. The only real answer you`ll get is when you play in front of a person that plays the cello (preferably a music teacher) and then he/she gives their opinion.

You also have to keep in mind that everyone learns on a different level. Some people will get it really quickly, and others won`t get it so quickly. You may be a better learner, or else the others may not practice as much as you. In my orchestra I sit principle cellist, and I come home and practice about 3 hours a week on my music. It`s not easy music. Anyway, we went into rehersal one day, and I asked one of the girls if she had practiced, and she looke at me and said "no," as if to say "I don`t need to." I was about ready to throw something at her..... Anyway, if you are dilligent you will progress faster than some other people who may be slacking off some. But remember, just because you haven`t been playing as long as they have, and you are on more difficult peices doesn`t mean that they are slacking. Again, they may just learn at a different rate. Hope this helps.

PS Sean`s teacher advice was good.

just keep in mind that as much as you think you`re good, there is a good possibility that you are sorrounded by musicians with poor potential.don`t think you`re good after playing a few childish pieces ....improvize
