i have a used fender fretless jazz bass and a used epiphone ripper and a little 50 watt crate i got all at a pawn shop. And they both work great and always have since i got the ripper a year and a 1/2 ago and the jazz bass a half a year ago, id say buy used but test it out even if you cant play, just to make sure it works and atleast has a good sound.

Wow! There are some real idiots here who are posting a lot of misinformation.

A Squier Jazz is all you need. Find a used one then take it to an instrument shop to have it set up. Set up is key in how the bass will play. The people who are saying not to buy used don`t have any idea what setting up a bass is and never had it done. That is why they say don`t buy used. Hell, new basses even need set up. They only reason they think thier new basses play good is because they spent a lot of money on them.

You need to have the action set (as low as possible is my preference) and the intunation set.

It takes years to break in basses and guitars. I say the more used the better as long as it`s still playable and in good shape. It`s all a matter of having it SET UP.

My first bass was a Hondo P-bass. Hondos are great starter basses. I got mine used at a garage sale and it worked great for a long time.

you should begin with a squier jazz bass, that`s always the best way to begin. i love it

and if you have the squier, START SAVING MONEY FOR A FENDER JAZZ! i`m a (dutch) beginning bass player, and i`ve had my squier for two years now, and at last. i`ve got a FENDER. oh man, i have no idea what`s wrong with a mexican jazz bass, the sound is so good! i can hardly find a difference between mexican and jazz, except the price! but, yeah, the best way to begin is a squier jazz bass.for sure.

Don`t listen to any of these posts. Get an upright!! It`s a completely different instrument than an electric. You can`t beat the acoustic sound. If your dad starts with an electric bass he`ll have to start all over when he realizes he wants to play upright.

well for a begginer bass set i would go with a hartke begginer set its fairly good thats what i started out with the amp 15 wat was fairly decent but if u want to buy it seperate id go with jay turser about $150 and try to find good deal on an amp cable strap and gig bag. and to reply to the guy that said dont get a used bass no offense that statement is bs i got a warwick corvette 5 string standard for 900 and its frigin awsome btw fender is way over rated for a first bass get a jay turs or something cheap... but good now fendersquires arnt half bad from what what my friend said any way good luck with you hunt for a good present : -)
