Good quality?

We were looking around at brook mays today just to dig around because of the whole going out of business thing, everything was on sale. I found a guitar package that was marked down from 250 to 175. It's a Epiphone special II guitar, includes an amplifier, soft case, strap, phones.. I think that's it. Are these good quality guitars? I'm looking for a good beginner guitar, I've never played before and have been nosing around for a good deal. One other thing, could I learn the basics without a teacher?
