I have not been able to read music that well and I know I play way better than I read. If I am only interested in playing the piano for fun and as a hobby should I still consider learning how to read music more?

Here is my two cents.
I can speak Spanish but I can't read it. Would it be good to read Spanish? Yes, it would be good to be able to read a menu, or price list, or billboard when in Mexico. DO I have to? No, but it will make life easier and give me more opportunities.

So, to have fun just play. But I'll bet you can have more fun the better you can read music. (But no, you don't have to).
