This is a dynamic marking to tell you how loud or soft(quietly) to play. F is a loud sound. The dynamic range going from loudest to softest is fff,ff,f,mf,mp, p, pp, ppp. Mp is not the least amount of sound. It is in the middle range just a little softer than mf.

it should also be noted that mp is almost interchangeable with mf.

Hi, that symbol is a dymanic(sp?) marking. It tells u how loud or soft to play. "mp" means mezzo piano or medium soft. Any other questions? E-mail me. I`d be glad to help u.
