im aware that the common set up for rock is a 5-piece with 12", 13", and 16" toms, and for metal you get the double bass with a few more toms added on, but what is the common set up/sizes for a jazz kit?

well alot of the old old jazz kits from years ago consisted of a bass, a single tom (if that) a ride a crash a high hat and usually a piccolo snare for bigband or a "normal" snare. but take Max Roach for example, a jazz drummer from dizzies time, Max had a fairly large set. but most modern jazz bands have a typical "rock" set up with "jazzier" sounding cymbals and a set up.

i see, well at my old school, for the jazz band they had a 5 piece kit, but took off the second tom for it was a 4, and i asked why they did that, and everyone was like 'because its a jazz kit!thats why!' so, yea, i was just kinda curious. thanks.

I hate sterio typing!!!!!realy it does not matter what size kit you play, size toms you use,its all about how you play them.who sayes you cant play jazz on a 7 peace and who says you cant play metal on a 4 peace. Its up to the individual.experiment, and above all have fun.
