ok you guy`s are idiots, i`m on a snareline for BHS last year we where 12th in the nation for WGI and that was because we screwed up, you guys sound like you have no clue what your talkin about, and also your all freshmen so why should you. And hey if you in the pit and your lookin for a solo, don`t write your own after compiling a list of rudiments and passages that you actually can plya find out a motif you want then compile it off a certain lick or passage. Try to keep it simple and as flashy as you want, just remember to play to the best of your ability and also push your self to learn new things in a hurry, and good luck on you solo.

Peace,

Your Boy Big T

DO NOT PLAY ON A PILLOW....it doesnt help a bit...it actually hurts you..Playing into a pillow teaches you to pull the stick back INSTEAD of Playing through the Head. Playing on a counter top is more productive than a pillow... and as the posts before have said...Snare isn`t everything...to be a percussionist, you must have knowledge and good technique on everything from tamborines to timbales to snare,timpani,bass,mallets,etc....and this all comes in time from studying and practicing...Im in Long Beach Indoor Theatre in Independent A marching...once indoor season is over...I have all my guys work up a mallet solo of their choice and perform it...also I work with them on propper techniques for all concert percussion... During marching season you can tell that some groups have a great battery but not so great pit..then others have a weak battery and a strong pit...the ones that stand out are the groups with both strong batteries and strong pits... sometimes a weak group (battery&pit) could be the lack of talent, practice, focus. also not to mention the music and how it is written...You CANNOT get better by playing a bunch of easy things...Yet you get so much better by playing through very few Challenging things (with propper technique of course)....a good way to destroy a line is drama..too much drama in alot of lines...when you are with your line, your music and brotherhood is all you worry about..good way to have fun with a line...take a day off from your basic assignment in band..battery and pit should pick up as many Latin Percussion instruments as possible..go into a separate room and just samba, improve samba...it brings unity better than going to movies or bowling with them because you are having to get to know your group better by what they are playing..

Pit rocks like a mother*funk*er, in our district seniority > skill so even if your good as hell (me) you have to be in pit for your freshman year. i played sax in 6th and 7th grade then took percussion in marching this year (sophomore year) and i got a bass cause im good, dammit! LOL! but according to what is SUPPOSED to happen in our area is you take percussion in 7th AND 8th grade, then youre in pit for one year in high school. also you usually go from pit to bass then bass to snare or tenors but once you get on snare youre on snare for the year same with tenors and if youre equally good on both you can switch the next year

nothing beats 7 or 8 peeps playing harmonics on marimbas who can actually play percussion as opposed to banging on a drum

playing on a pillow helps your technique remarkably. If you can double and single really quickly on the pillow then you can "fly" on the snare. If it hurts that means that your muscles are getting a work out because your stick does does not have firm playing surface so the stick does not bounce back.
your supposed to have control over the stick and your supposed to make it come back to you and have complete control. and also youre not supposed to play "through" the drum it gives an "un-crisp" and unresponsive snare sound which your objective is to get the most high quality sound that you can and if you lay into the head your not getting the maximum response. By the way no PAIN no GAIN.

Playing on a pillow teaches you to pull the stick back and not get a "full through the head stroke" yes you can get fast as hell by playing on a pillow but then you dont learn playing through the head and it weakens your technique....dont believe me? Email Terry Sanders from Escambia High School in Florida..he is the director of the Diamonds Indoor Percussion Ensemble...ask Tony Lymon incharge of Eminence Indoor percussion...Ask Tim Parkman from Harrison Central Indoor percussion....Casey Caviness of Long Beach Indoor Theatre...also Mark Reynolds of Rythem X and Long Beach theatre...or you can ask JIM MOORE,MATT SAVAGE,or MATT LITTLE....all three i have taken lessons from...plus Andy Sanders....i can qoute them all saying NOT to play on a pillow....

Hello to all...! I am the author of "The Rudimental Cookbook" and "Just Desserts". It`s nice to hear that many of you are playing out of my publications. There are tons of collections and solos on the market available at all levels...and all of them will benefit you in many ways. Check out all of my materials and those of my good friends, Marty Hurley, Matt Savage, Dennis DeLucia, Julie Davila, Lalo Davila (and the list goes on)...! Visit Rowloff.com...you will find much there! Concerning technique...there is validity to learning a variety of stroke styles...up strokes, downstrokes, taps, grace notes, diddles, multiple bounces...and validity to different approaches to master them all. Most importantly, remember to practice whatever technique you are working on diligently and regularly. When you think you are playing great...then you`re ready to work harder and play even better. The process is never done...we can all get better every day. Happy drumming...

Hey, good for all you freshies out there. I`m in eighth grade and my g@y school messed up my form in 6th when i wanted to play snare. We have this things for students who aren`t in BAND, CHORUS,GENERAL MUSIC or ORCHESTRA thats called "Performance Arts" where we mostly learn about music. i love the snare so much i make beats EVERY DAY EVERY MINUTE POSSIBLE..just using my wrist, nuckles, and pencil. I did it so much it annoyed muh teachers and i got several refferals Our Peformance Arts teach got so mad that she decided to order drum pads for our class. We`ve learned all the notes, accents, rests, but she cant properly do drumroll..lol. But when we first got them, i was pulling sick beats, and my teacher was hatin`. She got especially mad when i pulled da beat off Drumline, the one where Shawn says pay close attention, and Devon jumps in, muh friend said "It`s because he`s black, he`s got rythm!" We all busted out laughing, except her. But i wanna kno if someone could hit me up with some beats. Original or someone else`s...HOLLA ATCHA boy-- DaYoungBalla13@aol.com
