What Makes the Any Saxophone Better than the Tenor??    14:17 on Thursday, June 28, 2007 Vote for this post Vote against this post 0 votes

Greetings my few but loyal alto, soprano, baritone, bass, contrabass, soprillo, C melody, F mezzo-soprano, C soprano, sopraninio, tubax, and other non-tenor players!!

I've created this post to show the world, or at least some people (cough...cough...Triforce), that any sax is better than the tenor.

Feel free to post your reasons, but please don't put the the ovious reason: "Because it's not a tenor".

Thank you!!

I've been trying to play Satie's Cafe Music on my tenor, but it still sound better on the suggested alto. I like tenor more for romantic jazz stuff, and I'm going to be writing some stuff for soprano, and I'm planning on playing bass as soon as I can. Generally speaking, there is only so much you can do on any given sax.

I play the alto sacophone and it is nice and small and not as heavy as the tenor. me being quite small(compared to some people!!!) prefer not to have to drag around heavy objects(like tenors).

im not against tenors or anything i just like altos best.

A lot of the weight of a sax depends on its finishing; most saxophones are made of copper (not including those bamboo ones, obviously). On top of that most saxes have a coating that consist out of nickel, silver or gold.

Silver and nickel saxes are lighter than golden ones, you might ask yourself why? Because you can't apply gold finish directly to copper, therefor it needs a silver finish first before you can apply the gold. And that's what makes a sax heavier.

Of course size and brand matter, but it IS possible for a tenor to be lighter than an alto. I can testify on this first hand.

As for being little, yeah... I can understand that. Since I'm only 5'2'', but that didn't stop me from taking up the bari sax. Which is basically no problem when sitting, only if I have to march... But then I just switch to tenor. =P

well... i'm tired of fighting. lets all put our guns down and retreat, i mean, come on, after losing so many altos in battle, you gotta know tenors are better already. i think its cute how your still fighting with holes blown in your horns though. good job.

Coltrane is why this argument is utterly incorrect.
