A word of advice, Jupiter makes middle-line saxophones, they're not the best, and there are definatley better ones out there for the same price. Jupiter makes amazing brass instruments. Yamaha or Selmer is the way to go for a beginner sax, they make the best ones out there.

I would say to take a look at Selmers and Keilwerths. They are your best bets. I play on a Series III Alto and a Shadow Tenor. They've never done me wrong.

Student: Yamaha.
Pro: Yanagisawa, Selmer, Yamaha.

And if you do look at Keilworth, steer well clear of their ST series from Taiwan.

(By Selmer I mean Selmer PARIS.)

A couple of weeks ago I had the pleasure of working with a band called '!!!' (chk chk chk, for the uninitiated). Their sax player had had a mishap and his instrument had been left behind in Chicago, so he had to shop locally for a spare.

Now, the shop we guided him to is the area's leading music shop and carries a good range of top quality saxes. I was expecting the guy to buy himself a Yamaha or a Trevor James, or possibly even a Selmer. What does he come out with? A bog-standard Jupiter, that's what, and he seemed perfectly satisfied with it.

So, if Jupiter's good enough for him ...

There is a lot more involved in choosing a sax than how it plays in the shop. Indeed many top Selmers would play poorly in the shop, because they are ofen not well set up and adjusted at the factory.

Jupiter has a long-standing reputation for (typically Taiwanese) soft metal that readily bends out of adjustment. Not durable. Expensive, on-going maintenance.

Also a reputation for soldering that fails. This can be quite expensive, and result in burnt, brown lacquer.

A sax is a already a flimsy contraption, needing high precision, reliable adjustments, without having these issues as well.

So I cannot recommend them unless Jupiter has finally dealt with these issues. I keep being told they have, and then discover that they haven't. This has gone on for decades.
